What Does a Catalytic Converter do?

Since 1993 all combustion engine vehicles must have a catalytic converter installed. 

Your car exhaust system produces harmful pollutants and emissions of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides that damage the earth's atmosphere contributing to climate change.

The catalytic converter reduces these toxic pollutants by removing these emissions and converting them into less harmful gases water vapour and carbon dioxide. This is done by a series of chemical reactions and processes. 

Catalytic Converter Problems

A failing catalytic converter can cause it not to work properly releasing harmful emissions and reducing the car engine's performance. 

A lot of catalytic converter problems come from temperature changes in the car's exhaust system. Excessive unburnt fuel inside the exhaust system can cause the catalytic converter's temperatures to rise, damaging the internal workings of the catalytic converter.

Also, if the catalytic converter gets too cold the honeycomb structure can break down and obstruct the exhaust pipe. 

Both of these issues can result in poor engine performance.

Catalytic Converter Theft

Stealing catalytic converters is quite common in the UK due to the internal precious metals that it's constructed with. This can be a headache for drivers as they're costly to replace. As well as causing travel issues, especially if it's your livelihood. 

More recently, hybrid cars, such as the Toyota Prius have been targeted more due to the higher concentration of these precious metals in their catalytic converters than average.
