What is a Timing Belt?
The timing belt (Or cam belt) is required to turn the camshaft at the correct speed in synchronization with the crankshaft to ensure that the valves in the engine cylinders open at the right time. This makes the timing belt an integral part of any internal combustion engine.
To ensure the correct tension, it is recommended that all timing belt parts be replaced and the timing belt kits feature the timing belt, the idler and the tensioner pulleys which are required to maintain, increase or decrease the tension on the belt.
When does Timing Belt need to be Replaced?
It is important to replace timing belts at recommended intervals because if the belt breaks when the engine is running it can cause catastrophic and irreparable damage.
If a timing belt is broken or slipping, you should consider changing the belt.
Look out for:
- High RPM engine problems
- Performance and low acceleration issues
- Engine misfiring due to a slipping timing belt
- Ticking noise from engine (This could also be low oil pressure or low engine lubrication)
- Oil leaking on the timing belt cover
Cost for Timing Belt Replacement
If you're handy in the garage then changing the cam belt (timing belt) can be replaced with a little mechanical knowledge. However, if you're unsure get your local garage to do the work. The costs vary, and are around £300 upwards depending on the garage and make and model of your car.
What is a Camshaft?
A Camshaft sits at the top of the engine and features egg-shaped cams to open and close the valves in the engine.
What's the Difference between a Crankshaft and a Camshaft?
Sometimes the crankshaft and camshaft get mixed up. The crankshaft and camshaft work together in a tightly-choreographed function for the engine in your car to operate smoothly.
The camshaft sits at the top and usually uses egg-shaped cams to open and close the valves. The crankshaft at the bottom converts the cranks to rotational motion. They are connected by the timing belt and must work in harmony together. This is called valve timing.
