Why is Engine Lubrication Important?

Efficient lubrication is crucial for prolonging the lifespan of your engine, as it can prevent everything from jamming to overheating. So, by taking care of your vehicle's lubrication system and replacing its seals, filters, and other parts as necessary, you can improve the performance of your car — and save yourself from more expensive repairs too.

How do I Know what Oil to Put in My Car?

If the 'engine oil is low’ light comes on, it's best to check the oil level.

Not all oil types are not suited to all engines. Firstly, check the car's manual. It'll tell you what type of engine oil is preferred for your car's make and model. If the manual is missing you can ask one of our staff at a GSF Car Parts store which oil to use.

There are a few types of engine oil grades. You can decode the numbers and letters by the following code

  • The '5' refers to the viscosity in cold weather. Viscosity is how thick or thin the oil is.
  • 'W' stands for 'winter'
  • The other numbers like '30' or '40' are the oil flow at high temperatures. '30' for newer petrol engines and '40' for diesel or older petrol engines.

Engine oils can be described as semi-synthetic and fully synthetic oils. Semi-synthetic oil is more expensive than mineral oils and cheaper than fully synthetic. Fully synthetic oils offer better performance and protection, degrading slower than semi-synthetic.

How to check your oil level?

Always check the car's manual for the correct amount of engine oil that should be in the vehicle.

To check the engine oil yourself, you should first open the bonnet and locate the dipstick. It'll be a ring that is near the side and top of your engine. Pull the dipstick right out and wipe any excess oil away with a clean cloth. You'll get a clean oil level reading by doing this.

Reinsert it back into the engine and then pull it back out. They'll be two marks at the bottom of the dipstick and the oil level should sit between the two.

The minimum and maximum levels of your engine oil. If it's below you will need to top up your oil immediately. If it's above your oil has been overfilled and could damage the engine and deliver a low performance.

How do you know if you need an Oil Change?

  • Lots of driving miles - If you're a regular driver, clocking up lots of miles, you should look at changing your oil every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Older cars around every 3000 miles
  • Engine oil sign is on - Your car's engine oil dashboard light or message will illuminate when your next oil change is due
  • Consistency - Check a little bit of oil off your dipstick. If it's gritty or coarse, it's time to change the oil
  • Colour - New oil has a transparent brown colour, whereas older oil is darker and more black
  • Oil level keeps dropping - As your oil gets older the lubricating property of the oil reduces meaning your car needs to use more oil. If you change the oil and it still keeps dropping it's time to check for a leak
  • Increased engine noise - Engine noise can be caused by old engine oil losing its lubricating properties the engine's moving parts might begin to grind against each other, causing major damage

What does an Oil Filter do?

The oil filter keeps your engine and oil clean, removing oxidized oil, metallic particles, and other dirt from your oil. Purifying it so that it works through your engine more efficiently. Changing your car oil filter reduces the amount of wear on your engine.
