How do I Know what Oil to Put in My Car?
If the engine oil light comes on, it's time to check the oil. So the question you ask is 'what type of engine oil for my car?'
Always check the car's manual. It'll show you here which type of engine oil is suitable for your make and model. Engine oil is graded by its viscosity. How thick or thin it is. If the manual is missing you can ask one of our staff at a GSF Car Parts store which oil to use.
The two types of common engine oil grades are 5W-30 and 5W-40. The '5' refers to the viscosity in cold weather, and the 'W' stands for 'winter'. The other numbers, '30' and '40' represent the oil flow at high temperatures. '30' tends to be for newer petrol engines and '40' is more for older petrol or diesel engines.
It's always best to make sure you've got the correct engine oil in your car as the wrong kind could lead to engine damage. And always make sure you give your engine oil a top-up, otherwise, it might completely ruin the engine in your car.
How to check your oil level?
You should always check the car's manual for the correct amount of oil that should be in the vehicle.
To check your engine oil level, you need to open the bonnet of your car and find the dipstick. It looks like a ring pull coming from the engine. Pull the dipstick out all the way and wipe the excess oil away with a clean cloth. This will make sure you get a clear reading. Reinsert it back into the engine and pull it back out again. This will give you an accurate engine oil reading. They'll be two marks on your dipstick which show the minimum and maximum amount of oil you should have in your car. The oil mark should sit in between these two marks.
Below the mark means your engine oil is low, and you should not drive your car and top up the oil immediately. It's also just as important not to have an engine oil overfill in the engine as this can also damage the car and hinder its performance.
If you need to completely change the oil in your car you can follow our handy guide.
How do you know if you need an Oil Change?
- Lots of driving miles - If you're a regular driver, clocking up lots of miles, you should look at changing your oil every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Older cars around every 3000 miles
- Engine oil sign is on - Your car's engine oil dashboard light or message will illuminate when your next oil change is due
- Consistency - Check a little bit of oil off your dipstick. If it's gritty or coarse, it's time to change the oil
- Colour - New oil has a transparent brown colour, whereas older oil is darker and more black
- Oil level keeps dropping - As your oil gets older the lubricating property of the oil reduces meaning your car needs to use more oil. If you change the oil and it still keeps dropping it's time to check for a leak
- Increased engine noise - Engine noise can be caused by old engine oil losing its lubricating properties the engine's moving parts might begin to grind against each other, causing major damage
