What is the Steering of a Car?

What are the 3 Types of Steering?

Car steering comes in three different basic types.

• Hydraulic power steering (HPS) - Where hydraulic pressure from the power steering pump assists the turning the steering wheel
• Electric power hydraulic steering (EPHS) - A hybrid of hydraulic and electric powered steering. An electric motor powers the hydraulic pump rather than a belt from the engine
• Fully electric power steering (EPS) - An electric motor replaces the hydraulic pump delivering a fully electric power steering system

What are the Signs of Steering Column Problems?

These are the signs to look out for:

• Your wheels are not in balance - A garage can fix this by easily having them realign and re-balance the wheels, fixing the car steering tracking
• Ball Joints - Clunking sounds could be the ball joints in your steering mechanism
• Damaged Brakes - If your discs and pads or drums and shoes are damaged or broken, the vibration might be present in the car's steering mechanism
• Worn tread - If your tread is worn and uneven, it might cause steering issues
• Loose Lugs and Bolts - Check your lugs and bolts are properly tightened
• Worn Strut Bearings - If you hear a knocking sound, it could be worn strut bearings. They need to be replaced at the same time
