What's the Difference between Lug Bolts and Lug Nuts?

You'll notice on different cars that some have lug nuts and some cars have lug bolts. Also known as wheel nuts and wheel bolts

The main difference between the two is that a lug nut screws onto a threaded wheel stud that is attached to a wheel hub. A lug bolt removes the need for a wheel stud. The lug bolt design lets the wheel and the brake disc (sometimes known as a rotor) be directly attached to the wheel hub.

Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Saab, and Volkswagen tend to use lug bolts or wheel bolts, and most other cars use lug nuts.

Types of Wheels

There are a few different types of wheel designs that your car might have. We look at the most common three.

  • Steel Wheels - Inexpensive, functional but heavy. Generally found on ranges of budget modern cars
  • Alloy - Most common, stronger than the steel wheel, and light. You'll find these on most modern cars
  • Chrome - Chrome-plated steel wheels are usually found on classic and custom cars
